The NU-49 tube microphone

Following the success of the NU-47 tube microphone, the next logical step was to develop a multi-pattern microphone. But the availability of microphone quality tubes presented a serious challenge. The solution was both simple and radical, I designed a whole new type of circuit instead of trying to find a less than perfect substitute for those old tubes.

But that wasn't enough. It had always bothered me that the true cardioid pattern (with only a single diaphragm connected) always had the highest quality sound. Now, probably for the first time in a microphone, all three polar patterns are optimized and not compromised. Lowest possible noise and maximum resolution.

After the first listening sessions at Bruce Swedien's private studio he said he needed one of these microphones. Once I told him it can do figure-of-8 too, he ordered a pair...
